The Department of Communications and Electronics works on topics which are common to the areas of components, communications and services. It brings together the whole range of technological driving forces related to multimedia. Moreover, it provides a place where the latest algorithmic concepts and cutting-edge technologies in optics and electronics can meet. By so doing, it ensures knowledge transfer and creates data-processing capabilities for the benefit of techniques of the future.
The Department’s research activities are financed in part by public funds gained through national and European tendering processes, but more than a third of all funding is gained directly from industrial contracts. These different sources of finance allow the Department to work on both pure and applied aspects of information and communication technologies on a permanent basis.
The Department publishes about a hundred articles in academic journals and conference proceedings each year as well as contributes to several scientific and technical works. About twenty Ph.D. theses are defended each year. As a result of the research undertaken, several patents are also registered.
